LAKELAND COLLEGE MUSIC CAMP CELEBRATES 53RD YEAR
Registration is now open for Lakeland College’s annual Music Camp, which promises innovative programming for both seasoned and novice young musicians.
Positioned on a solid foundation of strong tradition, Lakeland’s Music Camp, which is entering its 53rd year, is known as one of the best in the Midwest for both the value and the quality of instruction. Dates for this year’s camp are Sunday-Saturday, July 26-Aug. 1.
The camp is distinct in its exceptionally qualified and innovative faculty and its nurturing environment for students who have completed grades six-12. With a strong core curriculum and an imaginative medley of electives, Lakeland College’s Music Camp cultivates the best in students who possess amateur or professional musical interests.
Each camper chooses a major instrument or voice part and is placed in a band, choir, string orchestra or piano ensemble determined after a first-day audition. Directed by a professional musician, each ensemble meets two times a day for rehearsals.
Aside from their major ensemble, group lessons and music theory, campers choose from a wide variety of elective classes including show choir, jazz band, musical comedy, hip hop dance, conducting, stomp, composition, improvisation, acting, rock-n-Roll handbells, cartoon music, music software and others.
Lakeland provides a week full of experiential learning that will benefit campers long after leaving camp. Each evening is filled with a variety of concerts and programs to complement the active days. At week’s end, parents are invited to attend a special celebration of their campers’ expanded learning and diligent practice. They will enjoy ensemble concerts as well as the performance in which all campers join together for a grand finale.
Campers may also participate in the honors recital competition. First- and second-place winners are awarded full or partial scholarships to the 2010 Music Camp.
Registrations will be accepted through Friday, July 17. The fee for the weeklong session is $399 for resident students and $299 for commuters. Fees include the cost of instruction, food and lodging in Lakeland residence halls. Several camp counselors as well as an adult “dorm parent” are assigned to each hall. Full-course meals are served in Lakeland’s Younger Family Campus Center.

A variety of scholarships are available for specialty instruments and voice parts, or for referring a friend to attend the camp for the first time.
