To the Editor:

What a great idea to have a “dog” page in The Review! I like the attitude of the column writer.

However, it’s too bad that the top ad was from a puppy mill. Think about the number of breeds their ad says they can supply – 18 breeds! Now think about what kind of facilities and staff a company would need to do this in a humane way. Warm, dry facilities, appropriate diet -- especially for pregnant bitches and new puppies, enough staff to exercise and socialize the dogs with humans and other dogs, keeping a schedule to make sure the bitches aren’t bred too often.

Once you have that image in your mind, please go to this Web site http://www.nowisconsinpup pymills.com/photos.html.

Why isn’t the farm shut down? Wisconsin’s laws are not strong enough to do so.

Even if we can’t get legislation passed now, at least we can be sure not to support places like this. Don’t buy from puppy mill auctions (yes, they auction off dogs!), puppy mills or pet stores. Get your dog companions from shelters, rescue groups or reputable breeders who usually breed no more than two or three types of dogs.

It’s best not to do business with puppy mills – it just encourages them. Hopefully someday they will be shut down and these dogs rescued, taken care of and put in good homes. Of course, some of the dogs will be too damaged mentally or physically to place in homes.

There are many kennels, providers of dog products and rescue organizations in our area that do what they do for the love of their dogs and I look forward to seeing their ads on the “dog” page soon.
