Is it your turn to coach?

by Steve Ottman Falls News Corresponden

Now might be the most important time of all to turn off you computer and television and get out there and coach.

With the recent coaching staff and extra-curricular budget reductions in the Sheboygan Falls School District, there may never be a better time to do something for our local kids.

The middle school and high school sports programs are likely to lose valuable coaches, due to a drop in state aid for school districts.

After attending the latest town hall meeting held at the Sheboygan Falls High School auditorium, a clear message was sent by the School Board.

We may have to do more with less. Over 14 coaching positions were reduced or eliminated, ranging from football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball and tennis to dance teams, drama plays and cheerleading.

Some programs were eliminated completely, like middle school cross country and cheerleading.

Board members regretted some of these cost-saving measures, but felt that they were needed to save the money of taxpayers.

The bottom line is our sports teams and clubs are still an important part of our children’s future.

Reductions in assistantcoaching positions will increase the workload of the remaining coaches, in turn reducing the time they are able to spend instructing your child.

Maybe it’s your turn to help

out. Many suggestions were given to handle the coaching cutbacks. Several coaches indicated they would remain active in the programs, while others will be forced to move on.

It is unfortunate that this has to happen. However, grabbing a clipboard, driving kids back and forth to games or practices or giving your valuable time in any way to assist a program will be the things we need to do to get through these difficult times.

Many of the sports also have clubs in need of help. You can join the Falcons Booster Club and help raise money for school athletic programs.

There are also football, basketball, soccer, wrestling and baseball clubs. Check with the high school office or a team coach for more information.

The middle school recreation programs, Falls United Football, select soccer and swimming are among the sports led entirely by volunteer coaches.

There is always a need for extra help. See you on the playing field.
