Plymouth’s Luedke double-winner

by George Baumann Special to The Review

PLYMOUTH – T.J. Luedke of Plymouth recorded a clean sweep in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing’s Sprint Car Division Saturday night.

Luedke won his heat race and the 25-lap A-main. Jim Schmidt (Cleveland) won his third A-main of the season in the Late Model Division – leading all 25 laps.

Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) made it two in a row – winning the Grand National A-main. Tim Simon (Fond du Lac) dominated in the Outlaw Compact A-main feature.

After the Sprint Cars saluted the fans with a four-wide parade lap, they treated them with a very fast and action-packed A-main.

Brian Portschy (Plymouth) grabbed the lead on the start but things came to a sudden stop after Jason Lax (Kiel) flipped hard in turn one on the second lap. On the restart, Luedke quickly took the lead and set a blistering pace.

Jim Melis (Glenbeulah) moved into second on lap eight and stayed there until Wayne Modjeski (Oak Creek) passed him on the last lap.

The second caution flag waved on lap 10 and bunched the field together. Luedke quickly pulled ahead and a number of cars were coming through the field. Troy Wondra (Lomira), who started 21st, was 12th on the restart.

Five laps later, Wondra was fifth and finished the race in fourth. Jason Johnson (Allenton) placed fifth. Tim Melis (Plymouth) came from 17th to finish in ninth.

Tim Melis, with Lax and Troy Wondra also transferring, won the first B-main. The second B-main went to Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) with Lance Fassbender (Burnett) and Scotty Thiel (Sheboygan) transferring.

Heat race winners were Ben Schmidt (Plymouth), Luedke, Portschy and Kevin Karnitz (West Bend)

Schmidt's Late Model win came after the race was stopped twice which bunched up the field and wiped out a big lead he built from the pole. Thirty-five-year veteran Ted Dolhun Sr. (Milwaukee) ran second until Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) passed him on lap 13.

Scheffler, a past track champion, started seventh and had to race hard with Dolhun and Bob Cullen (Chilton) before settling into second. Scheffler drove as hard as he could but could not reel in Schmidt.

Dolhun would hang on for third with Cullen fourth and Charlie Schmidt (Oostburg), fifth.

Heat races were won by Joe Schmidt (Kiel) and Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls).

The Grand National A-main saw Scott Schwarz (Chilton) pace the first 15 circuits with several caution flags keeping the field tight. Rookie Kevin Lubach (Elkhart Lake) ran next to Schwarz several times but couldn't get by.

Luke Scholten moved into second for a number of laps before Brad Lubach passed him and then a lap later Schwarz for the lead. Scholten and Tim Thompson (Campbellsport) ran side-by-side before Loren Lubach (Sheboygan) passed them. They would finish in that order with Brian Kaat (Plymouth) fifth.

Loren Lubach won the B-main with heat races going to Scott Houpt (Belgium), Rick Hed (Sheboygan Falls), Scholten and Thompson.

Simon won the Outlaw Compact A-main after passing Sean Mueller on the fourth lap. While Simon checked out, the racing was close behind him. Cole Fenske (Cascade) was second with Shaun Goetsch, Aaron Stolp (West Allis) and Travis Arenz (Sheboygan) rounding out the top five, respectively.

Heat race winners were Mueller, Simon and Andy Singer (Cascade).
