Tigers’ Verfuerth threepeats on All-CLC first team

Junior outfielder Mike Verfuerth of Howards Grove was voted to the All-Central Lakeshore Conference baseball first team for the third straight season by the league coaches.

Verfuerth’s Tiger teammate, junior pitcher Eric Dickmeyer, was also named to the top unit. Dickmeyer moved up from honorable mention last year.

The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters are represented on the first team by senior Chris Bullock who was selected as the utility player.

Howards, which shared the CLC title with Oostburg, has a pair of second-team players – junior hurler Camryn Hurtienne and senior catcher Elliot Thieleke. Thieleke was a first-team pick as a junior.

The Tigers’ honorable-mention picks are freshman first baseman Ashton Holzman and senior outfielder Brent Kiesau.

Elkhart’s other all-league choices are junior shortstop Dane Blake and freshman outfielder Kyle Rentmeester – both on the second unit.

Verfuerth had an outstanding CLC season on offense and defense. The speedy center fielder led the Tigers in stolen bases with 25 in 25 attempts; runs scored, 21; on-base percentage, .492; doubles, three (tied with Thieleke and Hurtienne); and walks, 15.

Verfuerth also batted .311 and had a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000.

Dickmeyer, the ace of the Tigers’ pitching staff, was dominant in CLC action this past season. The righthander was 5-2 with a microscopic 1.71 ERA. He fanned an impressive 72 batters in only 47-1/3 innings while allowing just 27 hits.

Dickmeyer also threw a pair of shutouts.

Hurtienne also enjoyed a standout conference season on the mound. He posted a 5-1 mark and a 2.27 ERA. Hurtienne recorded 25 strikeouts in 35-2/3 frames.

Hurtienne also excelled at the plate – batting .400 with 16 RBIs (led Howards) and 12 steals in 14 tries. He had an impressive 1.000 fielding percentage.

Thieleke hit .302 with eight RBIs and 11 steals.

The statistics for the Resorters’ All-CLC players were unavailable at press time.

The other first-team repeaters include Oostburg junior pitcher Michael Woltring, Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler senior shortstop Ryan Stefanczyk and Cedar Grove-Belgium senior outfielder Brandon Garcia. Woltring was named to the utility position a year ago.

The unanimous first-team players are sophomore first baseman Christian Ertel of Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler; senior shortstop David Stecker, Oostburg; junior third baseman Andy Pohl, Random Lake; Garcia; and sophomore outfielder Dan Pohl of Random Lake.
