“Church Basement Ladies” comes to Weill Center
Having played 130 straight weeks in Minnesota to sold-out houses, “Church Basement Ladies” comes to the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts Aug. 30 for two performances at 2 and 6 p.m.
For 11 years, William Christopher played Father Mulcahy on what many consider the best TV sitcom of all time, M*A*S*H. Christopher is coming to Sheboygan to star in a perfectly cast role in this musical comedy, celebrating the church basement kitchens everywhere and the wonderful, unsung women who work there, often credited as being the heart and soul of any church.
In “Church Basement Ladies,” one meets the pastor, three main kitchen cooks and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation by preparing and serving the food. Together, they stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on due course as they cope with the changing world, of course, solving problems along the way.
One sees the four women handle a Lutefisk Dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, an Easter Fund Raiser, and, naturally, a steaming hot July wedding. Audiences will recognize these ladies as the true “steel magnolias” of the church.
“Church Basement Ladies” uses the renowned Scandinavian Lutheran humor writings of “The Lutheran Ladies,” Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson, authors of a host of humorous books, the most famous being “Growing Up Lutheran.”
The script is by Jessica Zuehlke and Jim Stowell with music and lyrics by composer Drew Jansen, who gave audiences the music for the popular long-running hit musical “How To Talk Minnesotan, The Musical.”
Sponsored by area American Family insurance agents, “Church Basement Ladies” is perfect entertainment for the entire family, for friends, for church groups and just about everyone. This show is full of good, clean laughs, memorable characters, and great music and nostalgia.
Tickets can be purchased at the Weill Center Ticket Office at 826 N. Eighth St. between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday or by calling 920-3243. Go to www.weillcen ter.com for more details and to preview other upcoming performances.
