Breast Fest hits its stride

The members of the Koene family of Sheboygan Falls are certainly doing their part in the effort to find a cure for breast cancer.
After last year’s inaugural Breast Fest at The Other Place Pub and Eatery netted $6,600 for breast cancer research, this year’s second annual event took a set up to the next level.
In an effort to expand the fundraiser, this year’s event included a 5K run/walk through Sheboygan Falls, which drew a strong group of participants.
“We had a really great turnout this year,” Becca Koene, Breast Fest co-organizer said. “We had about 100 people do the walk/run, which we think was a great for the first year.
“We can only hope to make it larger in the years to come,” she said.
Josh Herber captured top honors in the men’s division with a time of 18 minutes, 57 seconds. Ann Limberg was the top finisher in the women’s race in 20 minutes, 48 seconds.
Other men’s age division winners were Josh Herber (20-29), Michael Thill (30-39), Brian Passehl (40- 49) and Larry Bubb (50-59).
Women’s age division winners included Katelyn DePagter (13 and under), Stephanie Kleckner (14-19), Becky Neeh (20-29), Kristine Lulloff (30-39) and Ann Limberg (40-49).
Following the run/walk event, The Other Place again served as the place to be for food, beverages, raffles, entertainment, as well as silent auctions and raffles.
“The raffles and silent auctions turned out great,” Koene said. “We also had a group come from the Fond du Lac area called Clifford, which donated their time by performing for a portion of the day. The live music throughout the day provided great entertainment.”
After family member Elizabeth Howard was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2007, her family stepped up to play a substantial role in cancer-research efforts.
Since surviving the disease, Howard and her family and friends have participated in several events to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, including Breast Fest.
The money raised at Breast Fest 2009 will be split to benefit two causes.
A portion of the money will be used for the Koene family to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K Walk/Run Sunday, Sept. 27, in Milwaukee.
The other portion of the funds raised will be donated to local hospitals for cancer patients who need assistance in paying medical bills.
“We couldn't have done what we did this year without the help of the community,” Koene said.
