Turnovers hurt Resorters in opener
ELKHART LAKE – Quarterback Tom Sawyer scored three touchdowns and accounted for 225 yards in total offense to spark Gibraltar past host Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, 18-6, in season-opening football action Friday night.
Sawyer had two scoring runs and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Alex Larsen. Sawyer’s 13-yard TD run in the second quarter gave the Vikings the lead for good, 12-6.
The Resorters were only outgained by 36 yards on offense but suffered three turnovers (all interceptions), compared with none for Gibraltar.
Elkhart knotted the score, 6-6, when senior running back Tanner Rosso banged across the goal line from the 1 in the second period. The scoring drive was ignited by sophomore quarterback Kyle Rentmeester’s 42- yard strike to senior split end Travis Kosnicki.
“You can’t turn the ball over. Our quarterback made some bad decisions but he’ll improve from his mistakes,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann.
Feldmann said the Vikings put good pressure on Rentmeester on pass plays which was a key in the game. It was Rentmeester’s varsity debut.
“We had trouble blocking their outside linebackers. Gibraltar was very physical and their offensive line was bigger than ours,” he said.
“We couldn’t contain their quarterback who is a four-year starter. He’d roll out and run when the pass wasn’t there.”
Feldmann saw several positives in the game. “We had some good passes, catches and runs. We had very good reads on defense,” he said. “I know we will improve and build on this for the next game.” Senior linebacker Deric Lightle recovered a fumble for Elkhart.
