Necedah’s rushing attack too much for Resorters
NECEDAH – Operating behind a huge offensive line, Necedah rolled up 427 yards on the ground to key a 31-18 win over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah here Friday night.
The Resorters’ defense was missing starting tackles Jon Petrie and Justin Schneider because of injuries and the Cardinals took advantage.
“They have a big, strong offensive line that averages about 240 pounds. They wore us down,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann.
“We got tired and they pounded the ball up the middle. It was a huge factor missing them [Petrie and Schneider].”
Petrie, an All-Central Lakeshore Conference second-team pick last year as a junior, sustained a knee injury in Thursday’s practice. Schneider, a sophomore, hurt a shoulder in the season opener. Both players are sidelined indefinitely.
The nonconference football loss dropped Elkhart to 0-2.
Brett Jump ignited the Cardinals’ attack with 158 yards rushing and four touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter that broke the game open. The game was deadlocked, 18-18, after three quarters.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Rentmeester led the Elkhart offense with 201 yards passing and 57 yards rushing. Rentmeester threw a 56-yard TD pass to cousin Ben Rentmeester in the third quarter that tied the score at 18-18.
Kyle Rentmeester also had a 3-yard scoring run in the first period that gave his team a 6-0 lead. The Resorters showed good balance on offense with 201 yards passing and 141 on the ground. “We played well,” Feldmann said. “Our offense did great, considering what we were missing and we had kids playing different positions.”
Petrie and Schneider were also starting offensive lineman.
The coach thought the players who replaced Petrie and Schneider, and those who switched positions gained a lot of confidence with their play.
“Kyle was able to find the open receivers and hit them. We changed up some things [on pass protection from the first game] and it worked well,” Feldmann said.
“Tanner Rosso ran hard and our receivers made some big catches.”
Feldmann said sophomore nose tackle Alex Miller, who was giving up about 100 pounds to his opponent, really battled. The coach thought that sophomore defensive lineman Wade Schwochert, who is in his first season of high school football, did a great job.
