The Fair was spectacular
IT MAY BE THAT
summer was just waiting for Labor Day weekend.
If that was the case, the Sheboygan County Fair was the happy beneficiary of the delayed summer weather.
In a summer of uncertain weather, in the midst of uncertain economic times, one thing was certain — there was plenty to do, plenty to see and plenty of fun to be had at the 2009 Sheboygan County Fair. And plenty of people who did all of that and more.
The weather was certainly all the fair could ask for. After a summer of almostcontinuous unseasonably cool weather, Labor Day weekend was sunny and warm from Thursday through Monday.
With the struggles of the economy, fair officials couldn’t know whether the same crowds as in the past would flock to the fairgrounds, or if potential fairgoers would tighten their belts and stay home.
Just as their hopes for the weather came through, so did the residents of Sheboygan County and the surrounding area, as they came out in big numbers — more than a quarter of a million total attendance for the five days of the fair.
It just proves again that the County Fair is perceived — rightly so — as a familyfriendly bargain.
The almost non-stop musical and family entertainment, the obligatory farm animals and displays, the youth and adult entries in various fair competitions, the great variety of good food and drinks, and the vendors and exhibitors of all kinds mean everybody can find something to enjoy during the five days of the fair. The return of big-name entertainment on the grandstand, Sunday night’s concert by REO Speedwagon, was a welcome and well-received plus to the fair.
Fair Board members, volunteers and Manager Lois Roehl do a yeoman-like job of bringing together the event, coordinating the various elements and ensuring that there truly is something for everyone.
For much more than a century, in good times and bad, in war and in peace, rain or shine, the Sheboygan County Fair has been one of the signal events of a Sheboygan County summer and this year was the same again.
The only thing that could have made it better would have been if it was Memorial Day weekend, and the gorgeous weather was the signal of a summer full of sunshine and warm temperatures — unlike what we did have. But it just goes to show you can’t have everything.
At issue: Something or other Bottom line: Do something about it
