Fishing club gears toward women

PLYMOUTH – Giving women opportunities to fish is Janice Wittkopp’s continuing goal after forming the Women on Water fishing club three years ago.

“This fishing group for women is for people passionate about fishing. We’re looking for more members,” said Wittkopp, a Plymouth resident.

Wittkopp said the club is open to all women in Sheboygan County.

“We do everything that anglers do. We bait our own hooks, take our own fish off the hooks and run our own boats. Operating a boat isn’t that hard,” she said.

Wittkopp said the club has a 14-foot pontoon and two 14-foot aluminum boats, plus all of its own fishing tackle and other gear.

The organization includes seven members – four who are very active.

“We get together at the end of the season and show our fishing photos and have a fish fry,” said Wittkopp, bubbling with enthusiasm.

“This is a great group of women. We have a great time,” Wittkopp said.

Lake Winnebago and Big Elkhart Lake are the two main waters the club fishes. The anglers also travel out of state to such places as Eagle Lake in Ontario, Canada, where they fished this past summer.

“If they [women] want to learn, contact us. Our club will allow new members to use our equipment,” the club’s coordinator pointed out.

“I’m excited about the club and getting new members. I love fishing which was the reason I wanted to start the club.”

The club has a wide range of ages from the 30s to the 60s. For more information about the club and how to join it, contact Wittkopp at 917-7914 or 893-8921, or by email at fishgal5744@yahoo.com.
