Resilient Panthers notch big road win

NEW HOLSTEIN – Coming off a grueling tournament Saturday, the Plymouth Panthers showed a lot of heart in Monday night’s boys soccer match at New Holstein.

PHS chalked up a 6-1 rout over the Huskies to push its first-place Eastern Wisconsin Conference record to 7-0 (12-1-2 overall).

“Going in, we had a lot of things against us. We were down to 14 players [due to injuries], plus going up to New Holstein which is a tough place to play,” said Panther head coach Bruce McMyler.

The Panthers were missing starters Max Gatyas and Sam Zwick who sustained injuries at Saturday’s Sheboygan North Invitational.

“The kids really played well in the first 20 minutes. It was a very good team effort,” McMyler observed.

PHS salted the game away with a four-goal scoring flurry in a span of 18 minutes in the first half. Ryan Klecka gave his team a 1-0 lead with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.

The next three goals were tallied by Marcus Adams, and Zach Fohr with two. Brad Mallmann, Klecka and Ben Schuldt had one assist each.

PHS tacked on two more goals in the second half from Schuldt and Josh Suchon – both assisted by Fohr – to go up 6-0. Schuldt was called up from the junior varsity team.

Marc Popp kicked the Huskies’ goal in the 63rd minute. PHS led in shots on goal, 12-3. Panther goalie Jon Hintz made two saves.
