Falcons take own invite crown

The Sheboygan Falls Falcons boys soccer team went 3-0 with three shutouts to take first place in the Falcon Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19.

Falls blanked Howards Grove 1-0, Freedom 4-0 and Green Bay East 1-0 for its second consecutive Falcon Invite title.

“This was a great way to end the week for our team, said Falcons coach Jose Hernandez. “Our guys played very well and had solid defense.

“It lifted our team’s spirit,” he said.

Hernandez said backup goalie Shawn Burkhardt, who played for the injured Mike Herman, did a great job in defending the goal, while Mitch Thimmig ran the defense superbly.

The Falcons improved to 10-3 overall and 4-3 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.

Senior Nathan Brown scored the only goal in the Falcons’ 1-0 win over Howards Grove. Brown’s goal came off an assist from senior Dan Duda.

Senior David Bimmel scored on a header from Duda to start the scoring in the Freedom game. Freshman Will Meyer, Brown and senior Lewis Halverson each scored goals for Falls in the second half. Duda gave the Falcons their only goal against Green Bay East, with an assist from Halverson.

The Kiel Raiders shutout Falls 2-0 Thursday, Sept. 17.

The Raiders scored two goals in the second half, and kept the Falcon offense off the board for the first time this season. Falls lost starting goalie Herman to an injury, two minutes into the game.

“Injuries are seeming to hurt us with our depth,” remarked Hernandez. “We played hard, but after Kiel got the advantage, we couldn’t get a shot.”

Halverson scored three goals, as the Falcons stopped the Kewaskum Indians 5-1 Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Junior Luis Hernandez added the fourth goal in the first half to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. Karl Huberty knocked in a goal in the second half, while Doug Arpke, Brown and Hernandez had assists.

Caleb Olla scored the lone goal for Kewaskum. Falls outs hot the Indians 19-3.
