Huskies ground Falcons

The New Holstein Huskies racked up 257 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to defeat the Sheboygan Falls Falcons 27-13 in Eastern Wisconsin Conference football action Friday, Sept. 18, in Sheboygan Falls.
Huskies running back Austin Polster gained 149 yards on 18 carries and ran for one touchdown against an injury-depleted, short-handed Falcons defense.
“Our line did a great job blocking and the backs finished off the run,” said Huskies coach Chuck Lefeber. ”We didn’t know what to expect from Falls, but our guys responded well.”
New Holstein improves to 1-1 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (2-2 overall). The loss was the first of the season for Falls, as it fell to 1-1 in the EWC (3-1 overall).
“We played as hard we could on defense,” said Falcons coach Mike Nikson. “It’s hard to replace six starters and then to have eight players go two ways.”
In the previous three weeks, the Falcons were able to pull together and record some hard-fought victories. On this night, it wasn’t to be.
New Holstein three-back offense pounded away on the Falcons defense and eventually broke loose late in the fourth quarter, which Polster rambled off a 76 touchdown run to make the score 27-7 in favor of the visiting Huskies.
“They had a good ground game that wore us down,” Nikson commented. “They executed better than we did.”
On its first possession of the game, Falls struck early using the strong passing arm of senior quarterback Adam Lorenz.
After starting on their own 41-yard line, Lorenz connected with senior Andrew Endsley for a 42-yard pass play to the Huskies 15 on the second play of the series.
Four plays later, Lorenz found junior Nick Roelse for the first Falls touchdown of the game. Kody Meanor hit the extra-point kick to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead, with 7:47 left in the first quarter.
New Holstein tied the game 7-7 towards the end of the quarter on a six-play scoring drive.
Jake Entringer capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run for the Huskies. The Ross Klapperich extra-point kick was good with 2:25 left.
The Huskies running attack added another touchdown on an 11-play 47-yard drive, capped off by a 1- yard touchdown run from Cody Thede. The score allowed the Huskies to size a 21-7 lead, with 1:44 left in the third quarter.
Falls threatened to score, during a 49-yard drive late in the quarter. Lorenz led the charge for the Falcons, with 49 yards passing
However, the Falls unit gave up the ball on downs at the Huskies 15-yard line.
Hackney added the last touchdown for the Falcons as time ran out, punching the ball in from the 2-yard line. Hackney finished with 14 rushes for 86 yards.
Lorenz completed 11-of-21 passes for 135 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Endsley led all receivers with five catches for 76 yards.
Falcons’ sophomore Bobby Musil and junior Matt Hasler combined for 138 return yards on special teams.
“We get some players back next week,” remarked Nikson after the game. “Right now, we just need guys to step up.”
Nikson said Hackney and Meanor played well, filling in for missing starters Matt Henning and Zach Berg.
