Fairview students seeking exercise, funds

Fairview Elementary School will host its second annual Walk-a-Thon 2009, its major fundraising event for the school year, Friday.

Instead of selling gift wrap or candy as in past years, students will be collecting pledges from friends, family and neighbors and then getting some outdoor exercise by walking laps for one hour around the school grounds.

The event is organized by the Fairview PTO, which hopes to raise $6,500 to cover the costs of school activities, equipment, field trips and enrichment programs for the entire year. All donations stay at Fairview.

“In today's world, due to budget cuts in the district, without the help of PTOs there would be no field trips for the students at all, minimal new technology for the students and teachers to use in the classroom, or specialized teaching materials available for the teachers,” Fairview PTO president Kelly Haefs said.

“We want our children to continue to receive all the materials and experiences that they so deserve.” Area businesses have been asked to consider a corporate sponsorship. If you or your business is interested in helping Fairview meet its goal, contact Haefs at 893-8845 for more information.
