PHS girls win Panther Relays

Panthers second in boys meet

PLYMOUTH – Sophomores Haley Johnson and Niki Rhyan finished 1-2, respectively, to spark Plymouth to the girls championship in the Panther Relays cross country meet on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at PHS.

Johnson, who is unbeaten this season, was clocked in an excellent 15 minutes, 19.49 seconds as she successfully defended her title. Rhyan had a 15:58.72 effort on the 2.5-mile, rain-soaked course.

The Panthers had a cumulative time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, 56.89 seconds for their first five runners.

PHS, led by senior Greg Poser’s runner-up finish, captured second in the boys field. Poser, who was first last year, ran the 3.1-mile layout in 17:36.75. Tyler Walters of Sheboygan North was the champion in 17:07.21.

The Panther boys, who took second for the fourth straight year, had a time of 1:31:55.77. Little Chute retained the crown as it edged PHS with a 1:30:08.19 showing.

Junior Amy Thieleke paced the Howards Grove Tigers’ girls team with a fifth-place finish in 17:18.58. The Tiger boys were paced by senior Matt Bahr who captured 16th in 18:52.62.

“Both teams ran really well tonight. Our kids rose to the occasion of our home meet to perform very well. The wet conditions kept the times down a bit but we all ran hard,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“The girls had an awesome meet – winning the title by a minute and half. Haley and Niki really helped out our team total time with both of them finishing under 16 minutes.

“Our boys had a solid packing with three in the top 10 and our fourth at 15. Greg Poser, Parker Kastelic, Lucas [Schmidt] and Greg Rhude were real strong runners for us and Devin Gumm is starting toward that group to become a solid No. 5 runner,” Grosshuesch said.

“I saw some real good performances even with slippery, wet conditions,” said Tiger head coach Gary Kalk.

“Special recognition goes out to medalist Amy Thieleke for winning the Nos. 3-4 [runners’] race.”
