Elkhart’s Wolf third in National Runoffs

ELKHART LAKE – Bart Wolf of Elkhart Lake finished third in the Sports 2000 class Friday in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Championship Runoffs at Road America.

Wolf, who drove a Carbir CS2.8, finished 21 seconds behind champion Mark Mercer of Aurora, Col., who was clocked in 29 minutes, 59.942 seconds in the 13-lap race. Wolf’s time was 30:20.203.

Plymouth’s Michael Mueller placed sixth in Sunday’s Formula 500 event in 37:25.56 for 13 laps. Jason Knuteson of Danville, Tenn., was first in 37:17.94.

James French of Sheboygan led local drivers in the C Sports Racing class with a third-place showing in 27:35.943 over 13 laps. Matt Miller, Orland Park, Ill., took home the checkered flag with a time of 27:33.192.

Other local CSR competitors and their places included: Brian French (James’ father), fourth, 27:38.560; Jeff Miller, Elkhart Lake, 29:41.189; and Jason Miller of Sheboygan Falls, 15th. Jason, who is Jeff’s son, completed only seven laps.

This marked the first time that Road America has hosted the National Runoffs which is the climax to the SCCA season. Eight champions were crowned in the four-day event.
