Roncalli tops Panthers in EWC showdown
MANITOWOC – Manitowoc Roncalli, fueled by a sweep in doubles play, handed the Plymouth Panthers their first Eastern Wisconsin Conference dual loss of the season, 5-2, here Thursday afternoon.
Roncalli, which is unbeaten in EWC girls tennis (dual record unavailable at press time), leads the league standings. The Jets, who have all but clinched the EWC title, has lost only three matches in conference dual play this season.
The Panthers, who dropped to 6-1 in conference action (9-6 overall), are second in the EWC and have lost eight matches in league action. Total match wins in dual meets are used to determine the EWC champion.
Plymouth’s winners were Stephanie Stanczyk at No. 1 singles and Marisa Raeder, No. 3 singles.
“This was an extremely well- contested meet. The No. 1 doubles team [Lizzy Stanczyk and Amanda Gumm] played very well against the defending Division 2 state champions [Elissa Halla and Natalie Foster] with the match being even closer than the score indicated,” said PHS head coach Tom Pederson.
“Steph Stanczyk and Marisa Raeder kept their conference record clean [both 7-0] with well-played matches. And even in defeat, Rachel Eggert and Sophia Kiela played extremely well.
“Sophia is improving with each match she plays. She is beginning to learn how to play the game of tennis,” Pederson said.
In junior varsity play, Plymourh’s Katelyn Zelm and Olivia Matenauer won their doubles match, 9-7, in a pro-set format. They won six straight games to earn the victory.
