Tigers cruise to first victory

KOHLER – Collin Horness and Mike Verfuerth had big offensive performances to spark the Howards Grove Tigers to a 35-0 drubbing of host Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler Friday night.

The victory was the Tigers’ first of the season and improved their Central Lakeshore Conference football record to 1-2 (1-4 overall). The Crusaders fell to 0-3 in CLC play.

Horness, a senior running back, rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including one for 84 yards. Verfuerth, a senior wide receiver, had TD catches of 53 and 30 yards from quarterback Eric Dickmyer.

Tiger head coach Dave Schmid praised his offensive and defensive lines.

“We continued to make marked improvements on the offensive and defensive lines. We handled their blitzing pressure pretty well and turned some into big plays,” Schmid said.

“We put the ball on the ground three times but our defense responded well. Our defensive line is working hard to get off blocks and our younger players continue to improve each week.”

The Tigers lost three fumbles and Lutheran/Kohler, four. Howards held a 296-112 advantage in total offensive yardage.
