`Breakfast for the Brain’ for seniors
The staffs from Rocky Knoll Health Care Center and Libby’s House have teamed up and are cosponsoring and leading a series of 10 Breakfast for the Brain classes at the Sheboygan Senior Center. The classes will take place at 9 a.m. each Wednesday now through Nov. 18.
Each class focuses on a specific topic and the leader will present information for discussion, offer exercises, and provide handouts that support the topic. A complimentary, healthy, light breakfast will also be included.
New research shows that we can improve memory as we age, and the classes will teach how to do that.
On Oct. 7 the topic will be “Measuring Up.” While the U.S. hasn’t adopted the metric system, the class will discuss it, as well as actually measure a variety of objects. In many areas of everyday living, measurements are important and this class will teach how to use them to stay sharp.
The Oct. 14 class titled “Food for Thought” will focus on how the foods we select can help the aging mind. A sample exercise will be to name a spice from smell rather than taste or reading the label. A good take-home tip will be to continue trying to select spices that way while cooking.
“Tongue and Cheek” is the topic for the Oct. 21 class, which will focus on taste bud mapping; debunking the myths and explaining it all. And this class may have participants laughing frequently since tongue twisters will be a part of it.
The Oct. 28 class titled “State You are In” will focus on how well participants know the capitals of each state. There will also be questions about specific items relating to Wisconsin that may be well known or obscure.
Cost for each class is $2 for friends of the senior center and $3 for non-members. Registration is required by calling 459-3290 or signing up at the reception desk at the Sheboygan Senior Center.
