USS CANNON

To the Editor:

Friday, Sept. 25, John McGivern was at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts for a fund-raising event for the Naval Museum and Education Center of Sheboygan. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for bringing the USS Cannon to Sheboygan.

The opening performance was by the Navy League Cadet Corps Training Ship Abingdon Cadets. The cadets posted the National Ensign and displayed the flags of the sea-going services. Then each cadet told the audience the reason they would like to see the USS Cannon in Sheboygan.

Here are some excerpts of the communication from Richard Caswell, Capt., USN, Ret., WINSA president, to LTJG Robert R. Hanke, commanding officer, Training Ship Abingdon, about the performance by the Navy League Cadets:

“LTJG Robert R. Hanke, NSCC, commanding officer of the Naval Sea Cadet Training Ship Abingdon of Sheboygan and his young Sea Cadets stole the show.

Their performance was precious and it ranged from those who gave excellent presentations from the moment they were given the microphone to those who were waiting for the applause before they started speaking!

“Every one had solid reasons for bringing the USS Cannon to Sheboygan. “No one failed and the audience absolutely loved them.

“Their performance alone made your efforts worthwhile and they have recharged my batteries!”

When the USS Cannon is berthed in Sheboygan, many young Americans will learn about the dedication and sacrifice of our service men and women. The ship will become the permanent training platform for our Navy League Cadet Corps of Sheboygan. We will teach the young men and women of our unit, the different areas of a Naval ship.

LTJG Robert R. Hanke, NSCC, commanding officer
