Panthers’ Johnson repeats as County CC champ

SHEBOYGAN – Sophomore Haley Johnson of Plymouth successfully defended her girls title in the Sheboygan County Cross Country Meet Tuesday afternoon at Sheboygan Lutheran.

Johnson, who has won all seven of her races this season, was clocked in 15 minutes, 3 seconds on the 2.5-mile course. Her Panther teammate, sophomore Niki Rhyan, finished second in 15:26.

The Panthers placed third with 77 points. Sheboygan Lutheran captured first with 62.

Two-time defending boys champion PHS was runner-up to Cedar Grove-Belgium. The Rockets totaled 44 points, followed by the Panthers with 66 and Sheboygan North, 67.

Plymouth was led by senior Greg Poser who earned fourth in 17:12 over 3.1 miles. North’s Tyler Walters was the winner with a 16:50 effort and Cedar Grove’s Josh Mulloy took second at 17:01.

The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters’ top finishers were Megan Meyers, 12th in the girls race, and Justin Lisowe, 30th in the boys event.

The Howards Grove Tigers were paced by Amy Thieleke, who placed 10th in the girls race, and Matt Bahr, 19th in boys competition.

“Our teams did well in a very competitive county meet. Our hats go off to both Cedar Grove and Sheboygan Lutheran. These two small schools have real strong teams that showed their strength in this meet,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“Our kids ran some wonderful races to provide us with nice finishes. Most of our runners ran a strong second half of their races.

Haley and Niki continue to look real good. They both outdistanced the rest of the field by a significant margin,” Grosshuesch noted.

The third-place finisher in the girls race was timed in 15:59 – 56 seconds behind Johnson and 33 behind Rhyan.

“Our boys and girls junior varsity runners did an awesome job. We had four girls in the top 10 and two boys in the top five,” Grosshuesch said.

The PHS 1 team finished second in the JV girls meet with 61 points, led by Emma Roy who was third in 18:19. North 1 captured first in the meet with 25.

The Plymouth 2 squad was second in the JV boys competition with 51 points and was paced by junior Sloan Pfeifer who earned first in 19:16. North took first with 23.

Tiger head coach Gary Kalk saw good improvement by his teams, compared with two weeks earlier.

“We ran this course on Sept. 15 at the Sheboygan Lutheran Invite, so to see so many kids have dramatically improved times is really exciting to see,” Kalk said.

“Amy and Matt showed they are some of the best runners the area has to offer.”

“I thought they [boys and girls] did all right,” said Resorter head coach Dan Stephanie.

“The girls ran really well. I wanted a little more from the boys. When you don’t have your No. 1 runner, it kind of takes the wind out of your sail.”

Myles Galloway, the Elkhart boys’ No. 1 runner, didn’t compete due to illness. “Justin, Megan and Kate [Vollrath] ran real well,” Stephanie said.
