Dutchmen roll over Elkhart, clinch playoff spot

OOSTBURG – It was a chilly Friday night but the Oostburg Flying Dutchmen were red-hot – winning big, 35-6, over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in a dominant performance in a key Central Lakeshore Conference game.
Both teams entered the game tied for second in the CLC football race at 3-1. Oostburg improves to 4-1 in the league (6-1 overall) and clinched a state playoff berth.
Elkhart Lake drops to 3-2 in the CLC (3-4 overall). The Resorters needs to win one of their last two regular-season games to wrap up a playoff spot.
Oostburg, led by halfback Luke Menzel, got off to a quick start. Menzel started off with a 17-yard run on a dive play. An Elkhart face-mask penalty set up a 1-yard rushing touchdown off left tackle by Menzel with 7:01 left in the first quarter.
A 41-yard TD scamper by Menzelon on a sweep play on fourth down and 3 in the second quarter gave the Dutchmen a 13-0 halftime lead.
“My offensive line got a good push, and I read my guard and did the rest,” said Menzel.
Menzel had 151 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the night.
“Luke works hard, he shows what you can become if you work hard enough,” said Oostburg head coach Scott Ring.
Oostburg came out strong in the second half and scored 22 un-answered points to build a 35-0 lead and ice a big homecoming victory. The scoring outburst was highlighted by Jake Menzel’s 73-yard TD dash.
“There was a total lack of focus on both sides of the ball,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann after a disappointing loss.
The Resorters’ scored on quarterback Kyle Rentmeester’s 47-yard run in the fourth period. Elkhart hosts Random Lake Friday in another key CLC game for the Resorters.
