Red Star Express, well-known throughout the Midwest for its lively bluegrass and gospel music in the style of the Grand Ol’ Opry, has its roots firmly entrenched in eastern Wisconsin farming country. Beginning in 1993, members of the earliest roots of the band began to take shape, as a few musicians began an informal weekly jam session in Gerry Jost's barn in rural Newton.

For the members of the Red Star Express, music is a means of escaping the stress of everyday life, while sharing the joy of music. The band has performed at many venues throughout Wisconsin, ranging from church sanctuaries to community park concert series.

The band’s musical arrangements feature harmony singing along with standard bluegrass instruments – guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, upright bass, dobro and blues harp. They have structured their sets to bring a variety of singers, players and styles to center stage.

This year, Red Star Express released its third recording: a 14-track gospel album titled “Gospel Express.” They will feature several cuts from that recording, along with many other bluegrass standards at the Nov. 7 show.

Current members of the band include: Gerry Jost - mandolin, harmonica, vocals: Chris Jost - guitar: Eldon Klein - guitar, vocals: Sue Woodward - fiddle, vocals: Steve Nothem - bass: Galen “Tex” Hunt - banjo: Mike Mathes - guitar, vocals.

For this concert, local performing artist Peter Scheuerman of Plymouth will open the show. Scheuerman is known for his smooth country, bluegrass and folk vocals and his expert banjo and guitar pickin.’

Scheuerman and his wife Karen host the Plymouth Acoustic Jam and Open Mic monthly sessions at the Plymouth Arts Center. They are celebrating their seventh year in 2010.
