Eighteen Random Lake Middle School students were injured in a school bus accident while on their way to school the morning of Oct. 27.

According to Sgt. Blaine Spicer of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred at 8:39 a.m. at the intersection of Lynn Road and Abbott Drive in the town of Sherman when a school bus, transporting 26 students, was traveling southbound on Lynn Road and after stopping for the stop sign at the intersection of Abbott Drive, pulled into the path of an eastbound Ford F-250.

According to the bus driver, Judy Degnitz, 51, of Fredonia, because of the dense fog, after stopping she opened the double doors to listen for traffic on Abbott Drive. This was confirmed by the driver of the truck, 30-year-old Nicholas R. Mueller of Adell. Not seeing or hearing the truck, she pulled into the intersection. The accident report stated that because of the heavy ground fog, there was approximately 300 feet of visibility.

The truck, which was also hauling a utility trailer, struck the passenger side of the school bus and then struck a stop sign post before coming to rest. Mueller had two passengers with him in the truck: 7-year old Owen Kies and 9-year-old Tyler Kies. All three occupants of the truck were also injured and transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Ozaukee County.

The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, Random Lake Ambulance Service, and Random Lake First Responders responded to the scene.

Twenty-six students were transported to the Random Lake Middle School by another school bus prior to EMS arrival. Once at the school, a total of 18 students were treated for minor injuries by the school nurse and First Responders from Random Lake, Random Lake Ambulance, Plymouth Ambulance, Waubeka Ambulance, and Oostburg Ambulance. Two of those students were transported by Plymouth Ambulance Service to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.

Degnitz was uninjured, but was issued a citation for failing to yield the right of way from a stop sign. The accident remains under investigation.
