Panthers keep amazing EWC title streak going
KIEL – Plymouth’s reign in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference Girls Swimming and Diving Championships continued here Saturday with a dominant showing.
The Panthers won 11 of the 12 events en route to capturing the EWC crown for an impressive 11th consecutive year. PHS added to its record for the most league titles in a row.
Plymouth rolled up 204 points – only two behind last year when it scored a record 206. The new Kohler/Triad team finished second with 73 points. Kohler/Triad also includes swimmers from Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan Lutheran and Sheboygan Christian.
“The conference championship was one of our goals. It was a team effort. Everyone scored team points,” said Panther head coach Mike Slagle.
PHS showed outstanding depth with the top-three finishers in three events and three or more placewinners in eight events. The Panthers were paced by sophomore double-winner Kate Criter. Criter successfully defended her 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke title with times of 1 minute, .97 seconds and 1:08.09, respectively.
Plymouth set meet and pool records in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.76. The members of the winning relay were sophomore Lauren Halle, junior Sarah Ebbott, sophomore Sarah Coley and Criter. The old EWC mark of 1:43.57 was set by Chilton in 1999.
The Panthers’ 200 medley relay also established pool and league records with a winning time of 1:55.61. The relay, which swam a season best, consisted of seniors Clare Witkowski and Lena Mylin, Criter and Halle. The previous record was 1:55.85, set by PHS last year.
“It was a good meet but not one of our best meets of the year,” Slagle said. “I was hoping for a few more drops [in times].
“I’m happy we won the conference championship. I’m proud of the girls. It means a lot to the program to keep that streak going.”
Slagle said the divers, 200 freestylers, and the 200 medley and freestyle relays did very well.
The following Panthers recorded personal records: Taylor Handrow in the 100 breaststroke, Rachel Sommer, 100 freestyle and Sage Calhoun in the 50 freestyle. Plymouth divers Danielle Holzer, Ali Mahloch and Kaitlynn Stirling posted season-best scores as they finished 1-2-3, respectively.
