EL-G’s Petrie on All-CLC first teams

Tigers’ Verfuerth, Horness, Morgen named first team
by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

Senior Jon Petrie of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah was named to the 2009 All-Central Lakeshore Conference football first-team offense and defense as an interior lineman.

Petrie, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound tackle, is one of six players who were voted to both first teams by the CLC coaches. He was on the second-team defense last year at the interior line position. The Resorter captain was a unanimous pick on offense.

The Howards Grove Tigers have three All-CLC picks. Senior split end Mike Verfuerth and senior running back Collin Horness were selected to the offense and senior linebacker Zach Morgen earned a spot on the defense. Morgen moved up from the second team as a junior.

“For all the hard work Jon has put in, it is very well-deserved,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann about Petrie’s honors.

“He was the heart and soul of our defense. On offense, he man-handled the right side of the line along with Travis Carlson [senior lineman].

“Jon’s determination and leadership played a key factor. He is a teacher-player. He helped the underclassmen a lot. Jon was always a sparkplug for us on defense,” Feldmann said.

“He took on a lot of double-teams. Even when he was double-teamed, he made a lot of tackles. “He was explosive off the ball. He beat them [opponents] to the punch,” Feldmann observed.

The coach said Petrie was one of Elkhart’s leading tacklers this year (numbers unavailable).

Horness was the CLC rushing champion with 1,138 yards for an impressive 8.1 average per carry. He ran for 15 touchdowns and ranked third in the league in scoring with 96 points.

“Knowing he was going to have to carry the load that our tailback does in our offense, he knew he had to be in great shape coming into the season. Fortunately for us, he was,” said Tiger head coach Dave Schmid.

“He was a workhorse – getting his number called a majority of the time. He had the ability to run inside between the tackles and the speed to get outside and outrun the defenses.”

Verfuerth led the conference in receptions with 30 and receiving yardage at 427 – a 14.2 average per catch. He led in TD receptions with five.

“Mike really had a fantastic off-season working out. A very pleasant surprise for the coaching staff,” Schmid noted.

“He used his strength and speed to repeatedly beat teams with our passing – both long and short passes that he would turn into long gains. The workouts this summer gave him the confidence to become a great blocker on the perimeter as well.”

Morgen led the Tiger defense in solo tackles with 61 and total tackles, 183, for the overall season. He also had a team-high four quarterback sacks.

“He has the great combination of size and speed and can cover sideline to sideline as a linebacker,” Schmid observed.

“He is also big and strong to stuff the run. Finally, he has developed a great sense of timing on his blitzes that really disrupt opposing offenses.”

The Resorters have three second-team players – senior running back Tanner Rosso, senior linebacker Deric Lightle and senior defensive back Travis Kosnicki.

The Tigers’ second-team selections are senior quarterback Eric Dickmyer, senior defensive lineman Chris Klueger and Horness at defensive back.

Elkhart’s honorable-mention players include: offense – split end Kosnicki, interior linemen Carlson and sophomore Alex Miller and running back Lightle; and defense – interior lineman Carlson, sophomore linebacker Kyle Rentmeester and back Rosso.

Howards’ honorable-mention picks include: offense – interior linemen Morgen and Klueger; and defense – senior end Aaron Wagner and junior end Matt Wleklinski. Morgen was also an honorable-mention offensive lineman last year.

The other players who earned first-team honors on offense and defense are senior tight end/punter Andy Pohl of Random Lake; senior offensive interior lineman/defensive end Wayne Paulus, Cedar Grove- Belgium; senior offensive and defensive interior lineman Aaron Bley, Cedar Grove; senior running back/defensive back Luke Menzel, Oostburg; and senior offensive interior lineman/linebacker Craig Schumacher of Oostburg.

Paulus was a first-team player on offense and defense last year as an offensive interior lineman and defensive end. The other first-team repeaters are senior quarterback Mason Anklam of Random Lake; senior linebacker Spencer Jacque, Cedar Grove and Pohl at punter.

The other unanimous first-team selections include Paulus on offense; Menzel on offense and defense; and senior running back Nic Vrubley, Cedar Grove. League champion Cedar Grove has a CLC-best seven first-team picks.
