BERNARD J. SCHAUB
Bernard J. Schaub, “Bernie the Baker,” age 87, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Home in Fond du Lac, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, where he had been a resident since February of this year.
He was born February 5, 1922, in Cashton, Wis., a son of the late Michael and Anna (Ewelt) Schaub. He graduated from Neilsville High School. He then joined the Army National Guard and proudly served with the 32nd Division for five years, during WW II in the Pacific Theater action.
He moved to Racine where he learned the bakery trade and met his future wife, Martha Braatz. They were married June 12, 1948. They lived in Racine, then moved to California, Waupaca and Fond du Lac, finally settling in Plymouth in 1969 where he and his wife operated “Bernie’s Bakery.” They closed the bakery in 1987. The delicious quality of their baked goods is remembered by several generations and Bernie is especially known for his “mud pie” donuts.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he sang with the classic Choir for many years. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Plymouth Council 1789, a member of the Plymouth Kiwanis Club, and a member of the World’s Cheese Center VFW post 5612 in Plymouth.
Bernie also enjoyed hunting and bowled on several teams over the years. He will be remembered for many things but especially his good nature and friendly smile.
Survivors include his wife, Martha; eight children, Philip (Dianne) Schaub of Colorado, Theresa (Gale) Klatt of Hartland, Rose Cleveland (David Kempf) of Fond du Lac, Tim Schaub of Plymouth, Cynthia (David) Herman of Saukville, Bernadette (Robert) Harvey of Mishicot, Anita (Bradley) Schmitz of Fond du Lac, and Anne (Dan) Burg of Richfield; 11 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Schaub and Philip (Barbara) Schaub both of Racine; one sister, Dorothea Carpino of Sturtevant; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Mary; one sister, Appolonia; and one brother, Adolph Schaub.
A mass of Christian burial was held Saturday morning, Nov. 28, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. The Very Rev. Dennis Van Beek officiated. Burial took place in the parish cemetery.
Graveside military honors were conducted by the Plymouth VFW post.
A memorial fund has been established in Bernie’s name.
