Tigers overcome poor play to win debut

FOND DU LAC – It was a subpar showing for the Howards Grove Tigers in their boys basketball season opener but they did enough to emerge victorious, 54-47, over host St. Mary’s Springs Saturday night.

“We played poorly but were able to get the win which of course is good,” said Tiger head coach Chris Schroeder.

“Springs likes to run up and down the court and we caught up in that style [too much] and weren’t disciplined enough.

“It was tied 41-41 and then we were able to make enough plays, and played fairly solid defense,” Schroeder said.

The nonconference game, which was also the Ledgers’ debut, included two 16-minute halves instead of the normal four eight-minute periods. The WIAA approved halves for nonconference, regular-season games only if both teams’ coaches agree.

Senior point guard Eric Dickmyer sparked the Tigers’ attack in the second half with 11 of his game-high 15 points. Dickmyer was 9 of 10 at the free-throw line, including 7-for-8 in the final half.

“Eric played well,” Schroeder said. “Josh Horness got into foul trouble but was still able to get a doubledouble [10 points and 11 rebounds]”

The coach thought Zach Morgen boarded well and Aaron Wagner, Matt Wleklinski and Eric Bruesewitz played well. Morgen ripped down 10 rebounds.

Mitch Beau, the starting quarter for the Ledgers’ state championship football team this year, led Springs’ scorers with 18.

JV, FROSH GAMES Thomas Bricker netted 17 points and Davis Nennig had 16 to lead the Tigers to a 52-32 junior varsity win. Howards dropped the freshman contest, 60-45. Cody Klemme’s 12 points paced the Tigers.
