Resorters’ strong finish keys debut win
JACKSON – After a slow start, the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters kicked it into gear to post a 47- 30 victory over Living Word Lutheran here Tuesday night.
The nonconference contest was the season debut for both girls basketball teams. The game was a rematch of last season’s Division 4 regional final, won by Elkhart in overtime, 49-45.
Elkhart fell behind 6-0 coming out of the gates but rallied to take a 17-12 halftime edge. The Resorters outscored the Timberwolves 30-18 in the second half, keyed by a 15-5 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Junior point guard Stephanie Knepfel hit five of her game-high 14 points in the final period to ignite Elkhart’s offense. Five Resorters scored in the quarter.
“Our offense really picked up in the fourth quarter,” said Resorter head coach Don Kulow. “Everyone got involved and we scored inside and outside.
“For our first game, on the road and against a good team, we played well. It was a great team effort.”
Knepfel’s overall performance was strong. She also paced the team in assists and steals with three each. Anna Vollrath also had three assists and Abbey Neils shared the steal lead.
Vollrath was a defensive force inside with a team-best four blocked shots. Elkhart’s pressing, trapping defense played a big role in Lutheran making 24 turnovers.
