Tigers struggle to OT win in season opener

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers weren’t sharp but eked out a 46-45 overtime win over visiting St. Mary’s Springs (Fond du Lac) Monday night.

Sophomore guard Alexis Lindstrom was 3-for-4 at the foul line in overtime to key the Tigers in the nonconference girls basketball matchup. It was the season opener for Howards, which went 22-1 during the 2008-09 campaign but graduated most of that squad.

The Ledgers rallied in the fourth quarter – outscoring Howards 14-10 – to force overtime with the game tied at 41-all. Amber Lisowe and Jenna Shea led the charge with six points each.

Senior guard Kasey Latham scored the Tigers’ lone field goal in the overtime period.

Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff wasn’t happy with her team’s performance. The Tigers, who were guilty of 20 turnovers, blew a 25-15 halftime lead.

“Our defense was bad and we did not take care of the ball. The only way to go from here is up,” she said.

“I guess a positive thing is the balanced scoring. Ali Benning did a nice job rebounding.”

Benning, a senior guard-forward, had a team-high eight boards to go with 12 points, three steals and two assists.

Howards had three players scoring in double figures, paced by Lindstrom’s 13. She also led in assists with three and steals, four. Sophomore Brianna Morgen contributed a team-high two blocked shots.

Lisowe was the Ledgers’ top scorer with 17 – eight coming in the fourth period and overtime combined.

JV GAME

The Tigers outscored Springs 12-1 in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-9 rout in the junior varsity contest.

Brittany Wehrmann sparked the Howards attack with seven points off the bench. Alexia DeRuyter added six. Autumn Kaat had a team-best five steals.
