Warriors too strong for Falcons
by Steve Ottman Falls News Correspondent
WAUPUN – The Waupun Warriors overcame a slow start to pull away from the Sheboygan Falls Falcons en route to a 53-39 victory Thursday, Dec. 3, in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference boys basketball season opener.
Waupun starts 1-0 in the EWC and is 4-0 overall. Falls drops to 0-1 in the EWC (2-1 overall)
The Warriors and Falcons fought to a 20-20 tie in the first half, but Waupun pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 33-19.
Falls held Warriors’ leading scorer Austin Armga to seven points through three quarters, but Armga hit 10 points in the fourth quarter.
“We did a good job containing Armga,” said Falcons coach Eric Spielman. “Even though we lost, I think this team gained some things to give us some momentum in our next games.”
The Falcons played without senior point guard Spencer Hurlburt, who was lost to an injury before the game.
Falls closed to within two points with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Waupun hit some key free throws to pull away.
Armga led all scorers with 17 points for Waupun. Junior Nick Roelse guided the Falcons with 12, while senior Dan Duda had 10 points.
Roelse collected nine rebounds and three assists. Duda and senior Lewis Halverson made three assists each and senior Zach Berg picked up three steals.
Falls stopped the Chilton Tigers 63-44 in non-conference action Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Chilton.
The Falcons broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Chilton 36-23.
“We got into some foul trouble in the second quarter,” Spielman remarked. “I felt that Berg and Matt Hasler picked us up in the second half offensively.
Roelse led the Falcons, with 15 points and eight rebounds. Duda scored 13 points and senior Spencer Hurlburt added 12 to lead the Falcons’ scoring attack.
Hurlburt had a good all-around game with seven rebounds and eight assists. Berg made five steals. Mitchell Propson led the Tigers with 12 points.
