Resorters working hard to improve

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

ELKHART LAKE – Head coach Jeremy Harrison is enthusiastic about his young Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah boys basketball squad.

The Resorters have little varsity experience but Harrison likes their work ethic and willingness to learn and improve.

“We’re not as athletic as last year but the kids’ will to learn is better,” said Harrison. “These kids work hard and want to improve.

“We have a good nucleus back and they are very positive.”

Elkhart returns three letter winners, led by senior guard Dane Blake who was named All-Central Lakeshore Conference honorable mention last season. The other returnees are senior guard Travis Kosnicki and senior forward Jon Petrie. Senior forward Mike Henzel saw some varsity action as a junior.

Blake, the lone starter back, was the Resorters’ second-leading scorer last season with a 13.5 points-pergame average. He led Elkhart in rebounding with a 7.2 average and was second in steals and blocked shots with 45 and 23, respectively.

“Dane is a starter coming back that should show good leadership,” said the sixth-year Resorter coach.

“Travis has good basketball knowledge and will help in clutch situations.

“Jon and Mike have really stepped up their games and will be a huge help this year in the post and on the boards.”

Harrison pointed out the team’s weaknesses.

“We have only nine [full-time varsity] players and we don’t have a lot of experience on or off the court,” he said.

“We are not the tallest, so we need to be better on the boards.”

The coach said the strengths are that his players are working hard and playing as a team, and the guards’ shooting. Blake ranked fifth in the CLC in three-point goals last season with 19.

To improve on last season when the team finished only 4-12 in the CLC and 6-15 overall, Harrison said the keys will be to be patient on offense and stay positive.

“We’re going to surprise some teams. One of the kids’ goals is to improve on last season,” Harrison said.

“Our goals are to be in every game and give ourselves a chance to win,” he said.

Harrison gives defending champion Sheboygan Christian the nod as the team to beat in the CLC title race, followed by Oostburg. Christian returns four starters, including two all-league first-teamers in seniors Lee Veldkamp and Joe Meerdink.
