The face of government in the city of Sheboygan Falls could maintain its current complexion this spring, as all five incumbent candidates have announced plans to seek re-election.
During a Sheboygan Falls Common Council meeting Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the City Hall Municipal Building, City Clerk-Treasurer Joel Tauschek provided an update on the 2010 spring election.
Tauschek informed the council that Mayor Randy Meyer has filed his nomination papers for the April 6, 2010 election. Meyer is seeking this fourth 2-year term as the city’s mayor.
All three incumbent aldermanic candidates appear ready to seek re-election. Terry Van Engen (1st District), Randy Messner (2nd District) and Dawn Beimel (3rd District) have each taken out nomination papers, seeking additional two-year terms on the Common Council.
Current Municipal Judge Dave Specht has also returned nomination papers for another four-year term in the judge’s seat.
Nomination papers for Sheboygan Falls mayoral and aldermanic seats must be filed with Clerk-Treasurer Joel Tauschek at Sheboygan Falls City Hall, located at 375 Buffalo St. in Sheboygan Falls, by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.
In other business, Tauschek announced the city’s holiday schedule for office hours, garbage pickup and tax collection.
The City Hall, Public Works and Public Utility offices will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1.
As a result of the office closures, garbage pickup scheduled for Friday, Dec. 25, will be made Saturday, Dec. 26. Garbage collection during the week of the New Year’s holiday will follow the same schedule as Christmas week.
Tauschek said individual property-tax bills have been mailed.
“Property owners who would like to pay their property taxes before the end of the year should wait until receiving a tax bill, and then make payment before 4 p.m. on December 30th,” Tauschek said. “Any payments received in the mail on or before January 1st, will be receipted as a 2009 payment.
“All original tax bills will be mailed directly to the property owners,” he said. “Those mortgage companies that have requested tax bills will be furnished the tax amount only.”
City residents can mail property-tax bills to the Sheboygan County Treasurer at P.O. Box 202; Sheboygan, WI 53082-0202.
Payments may also be deposited in a drop box at the Sheboygan County Administration Building, located at 508 New York Ave. in Sheboygan.
Online payment can be made at www.co.sheboygan.wi.us/, clicking on the pay real estate taxes icon and scrolling down to the pay your property taxes online icon. All checks should be made payable to the Sheboygan County Treasurer.
No property-tax payments will be accepted by the city clerk-treasurer’s office at Sheboygan Falls City Hall.
In other business, the council approved a school/travel request for Steve Lorenz to attend an MEUW Joint Superintendents Conference in Stevens Point Jan. 20-22, 2010.
In addition, the council approved operator-license applications for Alisa M. Christensen and Tark R. Ojha.
Prior to the Common Council meeting, the city of Sheboygan Falls Housing Authority signed a subordination and assignment of land lease agreement for the Brickner Woolen Mill development.
In 2008, the Housing Authority approved a 15-year lease extension with Heartland Properties, which manages the Brickner Woolen Mill housing site.
The subordination and assignment of land lease agreement gives Heartland Properties’ lender, Settler’s Bank of DeForest, assurance that the city of Sheboygan Falls has not sublet, assigned or transferred any interest in the property to another party.
During the brief meeting, Kenneth Messner was selected to serve as the chairperson of the Housing Authority.
The Committee of the Whole met in closed session to discuss a template for measuring the success or failure of a planned second shift for Department of Public Works employees.
The committee also met in closed session to review improving efficiencies with existing DPW work hours.
The next Sheboygan Falls Common Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 6:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers at the City Hall Municipal Building.
