Resorters press the issue in CLC rout

ELKHART LAKE – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters turned up the pressure on Kohler here Tuesday night as they cruised to a 55-26 girls basketball win.

Elkhart’s full-court press and half-court trap wreaked havoc – causing many of the Blue Bombers’ 26 turnovers. The Resorters had a season-high 12 steals.

“Our defensive intensity was much better and our rebounding was much better than against Howards Grove [Friday night],” said Resorter head coach Don Kulow.

“Our defense created a lot of turnovers and we capitalized on them.”

Elkhart upped its Central Lakeshore Conference record to 1-2 (2-2 overall). Kohler fell to 0-3 in the CLC (1-4 overall).

The Resorters put the game away by outscoring the Blue Bombers 34-13 in the first half.

“We executed very well in half court. We swung the ball real well and kicked it out well for threepointers,” Kulow said.

Senior center Chelsea Watry’s career-high 12 points spearheaded a balanced Elkhart offense that featured five players with seven or more points. Watry was 8 of 10 at the foul line. Sophomore guard Rachel Knowles tallied a personal-best 10 off the bench – all in the second half.

“Chelsea did a really nice job. She attacked the basket well and drew fouls,” Kulow said. “Rachel gave us a nice spark off the bench. Abbey Neils played well.”

Watry also paced her team in rebounds with nine, followed by Anna Vollrath’s seven.

Neils hit six of her eight points in the first quarter to lead the Resorters to a 16-10 lead. Elkhart outscored Kohler 18-3 in the second period.

Stephanie Knepfel and Kate Vollrath led Elkhart in assists with three each. Kate Vollrath had a teamhigh three steals. Anna Vollrath was high in blocked shots at two.
