Literacy tutor training session to begin
The Literacy Council Project of the Family Resource Center recruited and trained 22 new tutors during Wisconsin Literacy’s statewide 1200 Tutors in 12 Weeks campaign.
These new volunteer tutors will help adult learners across Sheboygan County improve their literacy skills. Wisconsin Literacy has held this annual statewide tutor training campaign in the fall for the last several years in order to try to meet the rising demand for services among adult literacy programs in Wisconsin, including Sheboygan County.
Wisconsin Literacy is a statewide coalition of adult, family and workplace literacy providers. Visit www.wisconsinliteracy.org for more information. This year’s campaign was sponsored by Verizon and the Alliant Energy Foundation.
“There is a need to reach more potential volunteer tutors in the state,” said Wisconsin Literacy’s Member Services Manager Georgia Weier. “Our member agencies, including the Literacy Council of Sheboygan County, do an incredible job serving so many adults with such limited resources. They provide a valuable community benefit with the help of trained volunteer tutors.”
The Literacy Council Project of the Family Resource Center (www.frc-sc.org) provides free instruction for adults who wish to improve their reading, writing or speaking skills in English. Most tutors volunteer one-to-three hours a week, often providing life changing results for adult learners. No prior teaching or tutoring experience is needed.
More help is still needed in Sheboygan County. Our next training session for new volunteer tutors is Jan. 14 and 18. The training is free and all training and instructional materials are provided.
