Job comparison

To the Editor:

I recently came across some interesting government statistics in an article published in a December issue of the National Review that I would like to share with my added commentary.

The federal bureaucracy has added 13,000 jobs in the last year. The District of Columbia economy is roaring along with a 6.2 percent unemployment rate.

The average federal worker’s pay is now $71,206 per year plus an estimated $41,000 in nonsalary benefits as compared to the average private sector salary of $40,331. There was a politician who during the last election claimed that there are two Americas. Having seen the salary numbers, I would have to agree. There are the well-off government employees and then there are the rest of us.

The number of civil servants earning over $100,000 has doubled since the beginning of the recession. There is no sharing of the pain coming from Washington, D.C.

There have been 407,000 jobs created for government contractors in the D.C. area. I am eagerly awaiting the day when “hope and change” jobs trickle down to Sheboygan County.

Who is going to pay the bill for all of that largess when it comes due? I’ll bet that those involved in creating the D.C. stimulus plan, including Sens. Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl, will be more than willing to share that with Sheboygan County.
