Resorters’ win streak ends

ELKHART LAKE – Cedar Grove-Belgium pulled out a 42-39 win over host Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in a hard-fought girls basketball game Friday night.

The Central Lakeshore Conference battle was close throughout. Elkhart had a chance to tie the game at the end but missed two three-point shots, including one at the buzzer by Kate Vollrath that bounced off the rim.T

he Resorters, who had a four-game winning streak snapped, led 35-30 with about 4:00 left but the Rockets used a 12-4 run to go up 42-39. Kristen Slotman and Mariah Keller converted a three-point play each in transition to ignite the rally.

Abi von Heimburg sank two free throws to give the Rockets a 42-39 lead with 27 seconds left. Elkhart slipped to 3-3 in the CLC (5-3 overall). Cedar Grove improved to 4-2 in the league (5-2 overall).

“It was a very competitive game from start to finish,” said Resorter head coach Don Kulow.

“It’s disappointing with the loss but I can’t fault our girls’ effort. We had opportunities. We tried to make things happen.

“We made some crucial turnovers,” Kulow said.

Junior center Anna Vollrath had a strong overall game for Elkhart with a team-high 11 points, 13 rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals. Abbey Neils had six boards.

Stephanie Knepfel and Rachel Knowles paced the Resorters in assists with three each.

“Anna did a very good job inside,” Kulow noted.

“Abbey is really coming around. She is rebounding well and playing good defense. I hope she continues being aggressive.

“Cedar Grove is a very good team. They have a very good defensive team and a lot of weapons [on offense],” the coach said.
