Home radon testing advised
As January comes to a close, the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health is reminding everyone that it is “National Radon Action Month.”
Radon is a radioactive odorless, tasteless gas that naturally originates from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US and the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It can enter homes through their foundations and may lead to high concentration levels placing the occupants at risk.
Fortunately, this is mostly preventable. Radon test kits are available at many local hardware stores and, for a limited time, the Division of Public Heath will have short term test kits available for $10. To obtain a kit, call the Division of Public Health at (920) 459-4382.
Statistics show that in Wisconsin, between five and ten percent of homes have elevated concentrations of radon. More radon information can be found on the State of Wisconsin’s Web site at www.lowradon.org or by dialing 1-888-LOW-RADON (1-888-569-7236).
