Dilonna Johnson’s 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the game pushed the Whitefish Bay Dominican Knights past the Sheboygan Falls Falcons 48-47 in a non-conference basketball game in Sheboygan Falls Saturday, Jan. 23.

Falls held the lead the entire second half, before missing two late free throws and giving up Johnson’s last-second shot.

The Falcons defensive woes continued, as they suffered their fourth-straight loss to a non-conference team to drop their record to 7-4 overall. With the victory, Dominican improved to 9-2 overall.

“We have to play transition defense,” said a dejected Falcons coach Leroy Hamilton. “These nonconference losses are starting to bother me.

“We’re 1-4 and that’s not good,” he said. “We need to make lay-ups and free throws.”

After building a seven-point lead (35-28) late in the third quarter, Falls saw their lead dwindle in the final minutes of the period.

Falcons senior Alyse Hucke had a big 3-point shot and junior Brooke Buehler converted a three-point play, before sophomore Deysha Smith-Jenkins and Johnson led Dominican on 7-2 run to cut the lead to 37- 35.

Smith-Jenkins, a Division 1 college prospect, lifted the Dominican squad on her back in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 25 points in the period, before going out with an injury.

“She hit some big shots for us,” said Knights coach Kevin Schramka. “We’re fortunate to win. Falls is a good team.”

Smith-Jenkins hit two jumpers to tie the game at 39-39. However, Falls came back strong, with three straight buckets from Staci Hasler, Emilie Leffin and Buehler to retake a 45-39 lead, with 3:31 left in the game.

Two free throws from Dominican’s Nicole Pierringer and an offensive put back by Smith-Jenkins cut the lead to 45-43.

Leffin scored on an assist from Hasler to make it 47-45, with 2:19 left, but that was the last time the Falcons would score.

As the final two minutes ticked away, Falls missed numerous scoring opportunities.

Leffin led the Falcons in scoring with 12 points. Lauren Carman added nine points and Buehler had eight.

Falls was just 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Falls topped the Two Rivers Purple Raiders 46-39 to remain atop of the Eastern Wisconsin Conference standings, with a 6-0 record Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Two Rivers.

Falcons senior captains Leffin and Carman combined for 27 points and 27 rebounds to lead the team.

Hamilton was happy to win at Two Rivers, as it was the Falcons first win there in his six years of coaching.

“It was our first clean sweep of the Raiders,” Hamilton stated, as the Falls junior varsity and freshman teams also putting up wins.

The Falcons junior varsity unit jumped on Dominican 54-25, led by Abby Grossen’s 11 points.

With the victory, the Falls JV unit improved to 7-4 overall.

The Falls freshman squad took first place at the Southern Door Invitational, with a 3-0 record to improve to 9-0 overall.

Falls defeated Manitowoc Roncalli 39-27 in the championship game. “We had a solid defensive effort, with 41 steals overall,” said coach Tammy Ison. GIRLS BASKETBALL
