Police Academy openings available

The Sheboygan Police Department will conduct its 16th annual Citizen’s Academy from March 24 to May 26. This will also be the second academy class at the new police facility.

The Citizen’s Academy is designed to reach out to members of the community and invite them into the Sheboygan Police Department. Sheboygan Police personnel will teach academy classes and will be open, honest and candid about their topics. Class discussion and involvement is encouraged.

Instruction will be divided between classroom instruction and practical, hands-on exercises. Classroom instruction will include: police operations, criminal law, computer crimes, K-9 demonstration, community policing and drug/gang enforcement.

Practical exercises include: Emergency Response Team, vehicle stops, courtroom testimony, defense arrest tactics, weapons and firing range instruction. A ride-along program will also be available to academy attendees.

The academy is a 10-week program held Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The program is open to all citizens of Sheboygan County. Anyone from a high school senior to a senior citizen is welcome to participate. Interested citizens should be committed to attending all classes.

If you would like to participate, applications can be obtained at the Sheboygan Police Department or can be obtained through the Sheboygan Police Web site, www.sheboyganpolice.com.

Completed applications should be returned to the Sheboygan Police Department no later than Feb. 24. Additional information and applications can be obtained by contacting Office Todd Priebe, academy coordinator, at 459-3341.
