WEST BEND – The Sheboygan Falls Falcons turned in a strong performance to post a non-conference 58-42 victory over West Bend East Saturday, Jan. 30.

Junior Nick Roelse led the Falcons, scoring 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds to go along with five assists.

Falls improved its record to 8-7 overall, while West Bend East dropped to 5-10 overall.

The Falcons got off to a good start in the first quarter, racing out to a 14-4 lead. The Falcons’ defense created seven East turnovers in the first quarter.

Roelse, senior Spencer Hurlburt and junior Alex Grabowski made several baskets in transition for the Falcons in the early going.

Junior Jason Fenner scored a three-point play and Dan Duda hit a big 3-point shot, as Falls built a 32-15 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Falls used a full-court press to stop West Bend from mounting any type of comeback.

In his first varsity start, junior Andy Ansay shot 4-of-6 from the floor. Roelse nailed a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give Falls a 46-28 lead by the end of the third quarter.

“This was our best game of the season, using our transition game to set up our passing,” said Falcons coach Eric Spielman.

Spielman felt that Grabowski was strong on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Waupun Warriors held off the Sheboygan Falls Falcons 55-45 in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference game Thursday, Jan. 28.

The potent Waupun squad had to play the contest without leading scorer Austin Armga.

With the loss, the Falcons dropped to 3-5 in the EWC, while Waupun stayed undefeated at 8-0 in the EWC (15-1 overall).

Falls trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but came back to cut the lead to 44-43, with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons went into halftime down 31-29, after Waupun’s Derrick Winterback executed a last-second reverse lay-up at the buzzer.

“That play gave our team some momentum in the second half, said Warriors coach Randy Armga. “They defended Cory Nickel and that allowed Winterback free underneath.

Nickel had only two points in the first half, but came alive in the third quarter, with back-to-back 3- pointers to give Waupun a 39-29 lead, before holding Falls scoreless for the next four and a half minutes.

Once the Falcons got the lid off the basket, they went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 39-37 by the end of the third period.

Roelse dropped in two 3-pointers and junior Matt Hasler hit a short jumper to spearhead the Falls charge.

Waupun’s Winterback got into foul trouble late in the third, but Falls was unable to capitalize on it, as Roelse was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t make good decisions in the fourth quarter,” stated Spielman. “We took some bad shots when we could have gone to the hoop.”

Senior Zach Berg hit two free throws to tie the game up for the Falcons. Nickel answered with another 3- point shot to push the Warriors lead to 42-39.

Falls cut the lead down to one at 44-43 on baskets from Duda and Lewis Halverson.

Nickel’s fourth 3-point shot of the half took the wind out of the Falcons. A lay-up by Connor Krohn pushed the Waupun lead to 49-43.

Falls’ Duda connected on a nice pass from Hurlburt to cut the lead to 49-45, with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter. Waupun then finished off the game shooting 4-of-4 from the foul line.

Roelse finished the game with 21 points to lead all scorers. Nickel led the Warriors with 14 points and Krohn added 13.

Waupun stopped Falls 54-45 in the junior varsity game.

Aaron Krueger and Bobby Musil led the Falcons with 12 points each. Joe Lorenz and Zach Van Engen had nine points apiece.

“We played well, but our shots wouldn’t fall,” said Coach Jeff Duda. The Falcons are 3-5 in the EWC (8-6 overall).

The Falls freshman rolled over Waupun 58-48. Jacob Tenpas put in 18 points and Jake Hucke scored 17. “These guys are playing together as a team,” said coach Paul Houwers. The Falcons are 7-1 in the EWC (9-2 overall).
