Lady Falcons make a statement with big win

WAUPUN – Road games are always a tough obstacle when a team is trying to stay undefeated.

The Sheboygan Falls Falcons notched their eighth straight conference win by knocking off the Waupun Warriors 59-43 in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls basketball contest Friday, Jan. 29, at Waupun.

The Falcons improved their EWC record to 8-0, with the victory (9-4 overall). The Falls squad holds a two game lead over Plymouth and Kewaskum, with six EWC games left.

“This was a statement game,” said Falcons coach Leroy Hamilton. “I thought our team came out and played our brand of basketball.

“We took the air out of their game,” he said.

Falls was dominant on defense, holding Waupun to just 29 points through three quarters of play. After finishing the third quarter with a 51-29 lead, Hamilton sat many of his starters.

The Falcons had four scorers in double figures. Senior forward Lauren Carman leading the way, with 14 points. Senior Emilie Leffin put up 12 points, junior Amanda Milne came off the bench for 11 and freshman Staci Hasler added 10.

Hamilton was impressed with the performance of Milne, who subbed in for junior Brooke Buehler, who had foul trouble.

With less than three minutes left in the first half, Milne came in to spark Falls, with two big 3-pointers. “This was a big game for us,” said Leffin. “We worked the ball around and I found some open shots.”

Waupun gained a 12-10 advantage in the first quarter and kept the game close, until Milne arrived.

The Falcons held a slim 21-19 lead, with 3:45 left in the second quarter. Then Milne lifted the Falcons to a 10-0 run to end the quarter.

After Milne hit the big shots, she finished the half with an assist to Leffin to put Falls up 31-19 at halftime.

Falls dug down defensively to double team the Warriors’ ball handlers and built their lead to 19 points midway through the third quarter.

During a 19-6 Falls run, Carman hammered down a 3-point shot to make it 44-25. Hasler and Milne finished the quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers. The Falcons ended up with seven 3-point goals overall.

“We practiced hard on our shooting this week,” said Carman. “We came to play tonight.”

Carman led the Falcons with 15 points, as the Falcons cruised past the New Holstein Huskies 61-42 in an EWC game Monday, Jan. 25.

The Falcons built a 32-point lead (55-23) by the end of three quarters, before Falls emptied the bench for the fourth quarter.

Leffin connected for 12 points and Hasler had another game in double figures with 10.

Hasler, a freshman, has scored in double figures five times and has two nine-point games in her first season on the varsity squad.

Carman leads the EWC in scoring and Leffin is fifth and Hasler has moved into the top 10.

Falls lost to Waupun 42-29 in the junior varsity game. The leading scorer for Falls was Allie Danneker, with seven points.

Falls was outscored 17-4 in the first quarter and didn’t recover.

The Falls freshman team turned in a dominating 50-21 win over Waupun.

Jenson Hamilton led the Falls scoring effort, with 14 points, Nicole Fenner had 13 and Anna Mathieu added 10.

“We played well as a team,” said Tammy Ison. Falls improved to 7-0 in the EWC (11-0 overall).
