Sherman residents urged to attend Feb. 25 meeting

SHERMAN – There will not be a Feb. 16 primary election in the town of Sherman this year.
Town of Sherman residents living within the Cedar Grove/ Belgium School District wishing to vote on a referendum for that school district are being directed to do so at the town of Holland Town Hall at W3005 County G.
An item relating to County Board activities is the rural sign numbering system being considered at this time. Currently, signs in use at this time are more than 10 years old and many are becoming difficult to read. These signs are a necessity for Fire Department personnel to locate the correct property where their help is needed.
At a recent meeting of the Sheboygan County Towns Association, Steve Steinhardt, Sheboygan County emergency management director, displayed a sample of the signs being proposed for installation within the rural town areas. Proposed cost is estimated to be $35 if installed, or $12 if done by the property owner.
Placement of a sign for residences located more than 500 feet from the road would have that information displayed on the sign, especially for use by fire departments.
Sherman Town Board supervisors at its February meeting questioned the possibility of each town to have a different color or should they all be the same, should the sign contain both the town name and the road names or only the house number and road, and yet others preferred all three. Blue seemed to be the favorite color.
Local fireman Eric Backhaus explained that the sign color was not as important as a large house number and of material that stands out in the dark.
Other comments included that “truck drivers like the blue sign the best” and that uniform placement of the sign is necessary.
County ordinance requires that all signs must be in by Dec. 31, 2015. The ordinance requires a 35-foot setback from the pavement, and sign to be placed on the left of the driveway. Sherman Board members agreed to “go with the county program.”
Town Chairman William Goehring urges town residents to attend the Feb. 25 meeting, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Silver Creek Fire Hall. The proposed county sales tax will be discussed. It is being considered for adoption by Sheboygan County Board. A member of the committee will be on hand to answer all questions on the topic. Sherman taxpayers are invited to respond.
Only two building permits were issued in January: an Ag building for Dean Beyer and electric service installed for Jim Bertram. Building Inspector Frank Mayer reported that only one new house was among the 35 building permits issued during 2009.
Operator license was issued to Marie Pocian.
