Balance, defense fuel Resorters’ CLC win
ELKHART LAKE – A balanced attack and a swarming defense sparked the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters to a 63-49 win over visiting Sheboygan Lutheran Friday night.
The Resorters, who had three players scoring in double figures, hiked their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 8-5 (10-6 overall).
“It was a nice bounce-back game [after losing to Howards Grove Tuesday night]. We had good balance,” said Resorter head coach Don Kulow.
“We attacked the basket real well and we forced a lot of turnovers. I was fairly pleased with the defense. It did well enough to cause problems.”
Elkhart, keyed by a variety of full-court and half-court presses and traps, had 19 steals and forced 29 turnovers. Sophomore guard Maddie Landgraf, who had a good overall performance, led the Resorters in steals with a career-high six and Stephanie Knepfel had four.
The Resorters broke the game open by outscoring the Crusaders 24-15 in the second quarter to build a 33-23 halftime lead. Anna Vollrath and Knepfel keyed a balanced Elkhart offense in the period with six points apiece, followed by Chelsea Watry and Rachel Knowles with five each.
Elkhart had five players with eight or more points, led by Knepfel and Vollrath with 14 each. Landgraf added 12 points.
Vollrath had a team-high nine rebounds and Chelsea Watry, seven. Kate Vollrath and Knepfel led in assists with three apiece. Watry and Anna Vollrath were first in blocked shots at two each.
“Maddie has really been playing well. She plays with a lot of energy, flies around and gets her hands on a lot balls,” Kulow observed. “She attacked the basket well.
“Chelsea did a nice job off the bench and had six offensive rebounds. Stephanie had another solid game.”
Watry also hit nine points.
Amanda Dillman led the Crusaders in scoring with 20.
The Resorters’ aggressiveness in going to the basket paid off as they drew a lot of fouls which helped result in 17 more free-throw attempts than Lutheran. Elkhart had a nine-point edge at the charity stripe.
