Big D ignites Panthers in EWC rout
KEWASKUM – The Plymouth Panthers shook off a slow start to cruise past Kewaskum, 58-32, here Friday night and stay within a game of the lead in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference boys basketball race.
PHS, which won its third in a row, upped its EWC record to 8-2 (12-4 overall). Waupun leads the league at 9-1. The teams meet Feb. 26 at Waupun.
The Panthers led only 9-3 after one quarter but exploded for 23 points in the second period to take a 32- 20 halftime lead. Jon Criter keyed Plymouth’s attack in the quarter with seven points. Greg Rhude and Mitch Unger contributed two three-point goals each.
PHS blew the contest open in the third quarter with a stifling man-to-man defense. The visitors outscored the Indians 13-2 in the period to build a 45-22 cushion.
“We weren’t very focused in the first half and we committed too many fouls. We came out and put the game away in the third quarter,” said Panther head coach Scott Richards.
“The whole team played well. We played very good defense in the second half.”
Kewaskum was held to only eight field goals, including just two in the first half, and a paltry 23-percent shooting from the field. The Indians scored 12 of their 17 points in the second quarter at the foul line.
Criter led a balanced PHS offense with 14 points. Brent Krueger had a team-high five steals off the bench. The Panthers had an impressive 18 steals and forced a whopping 28 turnovers.
Unger and Spencer Strong paced PHS in assists with three apiece. Ian Murray pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
JV, FROSH GAMES
The Panthers held Kewaskum to only 27 points over the last three quarters combined as they earned a 52-46 comeback win in junior varsity action.
PHS, 8-2 in the EWC (12-4 overall), was led in scoring by Cory Unger with 11 and Alex Grahn, 10. Unger also had a team-high three assists and steals each. Parker Kastelic also had three assists.
The Panther freshmen coasted to a 52-20 victory to improve to 10-0 in the league and 14-0 overall. Owen Henriksen’s 11 points keyed the PHS attack, followed by Eric Roberts with eight.
