Wagner sparks Tigers to CLC victory

FREDONIA – Senior forward Aaron Wagner’s career-high 18 points and team-best 10 rebounds propelled the Howards Grove Tigers past host Ozaukee, 48-39, in boys basketball Thursday night.

The Tigers raised their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 8-5 (10-6 overall). The Warriors dropped to 7-6 in the CLC (9-7 overall.

Wagner was sizzling from the field – hitting 4 of 6 three-point shots and shooting 70 percent (7 of 10) overall. He also contributed two steals.

Howards started slow and were down 12-5 after one quarter. The Tigers, led by Wagner and senior guard Eric Bruesewitz, outscored Ozaukee 16-10 in the second period to pull within 22-21 at halftime. Wagner and Bruesewitz both tallied six points on two three-pointers each.

The Tigers’ defense came up big in the second half that saw Howards hold a 27-17 scoring advantage. Wagner and Eric Dickmyer keyed Howards’ offense in the final half with eight points apiece.

Ozaukee shot only 28 percent (15 of 53) from the floor.

“Aaron had a very good game. He has always been a pretty solid player,” said Tiger head coach Chris Schroeder.

“We moved the ball well and were able to get open shots against their zone. We just started hitting shots after the first quarter. I was happy with the team coming back.”

Dickmyer dished out a team-high five assists. Bruesewitz led in steals with three and was second in assists at four. Zach Morgen totaled eight boards.J

V GAME Mike Davis netted 19 points to spark the Tigers to a 63-50 junior varsity win. Thomas Brickner contributed 16 for Howards.
