Council backs conditional-use requests

The Sheboygan Falls Common Council granted a pair of conditional-use permit requests, during a semimonthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Sheboygan Falls City Hall Municipal Building.

A proposal to relocate Troy Laundry from 320 Pine St., to 614 Broadway St., adjacent to the Brickner Woolen Mills Apartments, passed by a slim 3-2 margin.

At a pair of recent Sheboygan Falls Plan Commission meetings, Troy Laundry Co-Owner Paul Marti explained that current economic conditions have prompted the move.

The relocation will involve downsizing the scope of the business to focus solely on dry-cleaning services, while eliminating the coin-operated laundromat.

Despite approving the conditional-use permit by a 4-1 margin, several commissioners expressed concern about door access, private-property and parking issues at the Broadway Street location.

At the Jan. 26 Plan Commission meeting, Marti revised his original plan, to include an access door on the south side of the building, to be used exclusively for dry-cleaning equipment and supplies.

Commissioner Ordell Christian cited the lack of parking in the area in voicing his objection to the move.

On the council level, Randy Messner, Duane Glancey and Dawn Beimel voted in support of the move, while Terry Van Engen and Anne Krauter cast opposition votes.

“Mr. Marti has agreed to install a separate door, to provide additional access to the building for equipment and supplies,” Mayor Randy Meyer said. “The next step in this process is to check the commercial building code to see if the addition of the door is permitted at the location.”

A conditional-use permit request submitted by Mandi Fenner for her new business, Addicted Industries, received unanimous support from the council.

Fenner’s conditional-use permit covers tanning, facial, massage and nutritional sessions at Addicted Industries, located at 334 Broadway Street, the former home of Ace’s Bar and the Stern Tannery office.

In other business, the council approved a Public Safety Committee travel request for Steven Riffel and Steven Ross to attend the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Mid-Winter Conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The council also granted operator-license applications for Brett R. Hummitzsch and Vanessa Hess. Van Engen cast the lone opposition vote for Hess’ operator-license application.

An electrical contractor license application for Kevin Meyer also gained council approval.

Meyer announced that the city of Sheboygan Falls Sex Offender Residence Board will hold an organizational meeting Feb. 8.

“There have been a few arrests made recently for violating our sex offender residency ordinance,” Meyer said. “I thought it would be a good idea for the board to meet now and get organized, in the event that it is called upon to make a decision on a case in the near future.”

The next Sheboygan Falls Common Council meeting will take place Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Municipal Building.
