The Sheboygan Falls Falcons pounded the Kiel Raiders 63-41 in Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls basketball action Thursday, Feb. 4, in Sheboygan Falls.
Falls lost its leading scorer senior Lauren Carman with an injury early in the third quarter. Carman but didn’t see any action the rest of the game.
Senior Emilie Leffin had a huge game inside, with 15 points and 14 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Junior Cassie Quirt added 10 points and junior Amanda Milne finished with nine.
The Falcons improved to 9-0 in the EWC (10-5 overall) to remain two games ahead of second-place Kewaskum.
Kiel kept the game close in the first quarter at 14-12, but Falls went on a 12-2 run to open the second quarter.
Quirt opened the door with six consecutive points and a Milne jump shot put the Falcons ahead 26-14. Falls led 30-17 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Carman went down with an injury. Leffin picked the team up with three straight baskets and senior Alyse Hucke nailed a long shot to put the Falcons on top 40-23.
Kiel mounted a brief comeback bid, as Brittany Meyer led the way with five points in the fourth quarter to cut the Falcons’ lead to 48-38.
Buehler connected for a basket and dished off a steal to Leffin, who converted on the fast break. Falls freshman Staci Hasler sealed the victory, with a big 3-pointer to extend the lead to 58-40.
“Kiel played physical with us, because of our size,” said Falcons coach Leroy Hamilton. “They pushed us hard, making us battle-tested.”
Hamilton felt that Carman should be ready to play in two big EWC games this week against New Holstein and Plymouth.
The Falcons lost another tough road game Tuesday, Feb. 2, as they fell to Union Grove 50-47. Carman led Falls with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Leffin scored 12 points with 10 boards. The Falcons shot just 25 percent from the field (12-of-48) and missed nine free throws (19-of-27).
