Phil Hands’ cartoons reflect moderation

Phil Hands has been drawing since he could hold a crayon. A decade later he realized he could use those drawings to share his opinions. He currently is the regular freelance editorial cartoonist for the Wisconsin State Journal and a frequent contributor to the Tampa Tribune in Florida. His cartoons are now also distributed internationally through Artizans.com syndicate.

A passionate political moderate, Phil’s editorial cartoons skewer politicians on both the left and the right. His cartoons about Wisconsin have earned him first-place awards from the Milwaukee Press Club for best editorial cartoon in 2005, 2006 and 2007. In addition to his state awards, Phil has received national firstplace awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Collegiate Press for best editorial cartoons. In 2007, Phil and several staffers at the State Journal’s editorial page were finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing.

An avid Packers fan, in his spare time Phil enjoys drinking coffee, eating cheese and being cold. Phil currently lives blocks from Camp Randall Stadium in Madison with his very understanding wife, Tricia, and new son, Owen.
